Improving RANS/LES Numerical Methods for Thrust Reversers

ChallengesObjectives

Thrust reversers allow diverting all or part of the air from an aircraft’s engine, causing a thrust reversal and thus significantly reducing braking distances. The objective of the study was to develop and test numerical methods on thrust reverser configurations to closely match experimental tests.

ProjectsGDTECH

During the study, numerous methodological developments were carried out. These include:

  • Mesh convergence: calculations on meshes up to 600 million elements
  • Highlighting the differences between “classical” turbulence models
  • Development of an LES computational methodology and analysis of unsteady structures
  • Use of an automatic mesh refinement (AMR) method in areas of interest
  • Exploration of unsteady and hybrid RANS/LES methods.
